Hypoallergenic dog foods for dogs with sensitive stomachs, food allergies or food intolerances

Cobbydog produces a range of allergy sensitive, hypoallergenic, gluten free dog foods.

Many dog owners have canine friends who have some form of allergy or food intolerance. In this respect dogs are very similar to humans. The cure for these problems is just the same as it is for people - find out what ingredient is causing the allergy or intolerance and change the diet to eliminate it.

Dog food allergies usually present as skin or coat irritations, while a food intolerance more normally shows up as an upset tummy which can lead to diarrhoea and vomiting.

Dogs with allergies to certain ingredients are likely to scratch more often than usual because their skin itches. The itchiness mostly affects the dog’s face and ears; feet, forelegs and armpits; and the area around its bottom. Symptoms can include chronic or recurring ear infections, excessive scratching, hair loss, skin infections and hot spots.

Of course, if your dog does have an allergy it is not necessarily due to something they are eating. It could be something they have inhaled or something else in their environment. For example, the most common cause of allergies are flee bites. The symptoms above can also have other causes, such as infections. So, if you suspect anything is wrong, the very first thing you should do is see your vet.

Food allergies can affect any breed of dog, affect dogs and bitches equally, can start to show up as early as 5 months or as late as 12 years. The most common age for an allergy to present is between 2 and 6 years.

Whether your dog has a sensitive stomach, a food allergy or is food intolerant, a change of diet is the best way to solve the problem. That’s why we make a range of hypoallergenic dog foods.

Our allergy senstive dog foods, Lamb & Rice and Chicken & Rice, are both sensitive foods which are suitable for dogs that are wheat intolerant. They are highly palatable and nutritious rice-based products which are wheat and gluten free. Both are favourites, not only for wheat intolerant and diabetic dogs, but also those with a more discerning taste or a liking for a sensitive dog food.

For dogs that are diabetic, a vet would usually suggest a dry dog food full of complex carbohydrates, low in fat and gluten free. The Lamb & Rice and Chicken & Rice are therefore extremely suitable for diabetic dogs.

Cobbydog Original is a cereal based complete dry dog food which is packed full of natural ingredients and dried meat pieces. The high quality proteins and carbohydrates contained in this product make it less likely that your little friend will react to the food. Hundreds of dogs each day, up and down the country, thrive on this - our most tried and tested dog food. It has been a firm favourite for over 30 years.

Don’t forget, if you are trying a new diet you must maintain the test for at least 12 weeks. This means that during the trail there must be absolutely nothing but the new food, so no treats, variations, bits off your plate, etc. This is because it can take this long for the symptoms to subside. Once they have subsided you can start to reintroduce treats and titbits, but watch out in case the symptoms start to return.
